For ALL The Moms......

FOR ALL THE MOMS...

This is for all the mothers who DIDN'T win Mother of the Year in 2008. All the runners-up and all the wannabes. The mothers too tired to enter or too busy to care.

This is for all the mothers who froze their buns off on metal bleachers at football games Friday night instead of watching from cars, so that when their kids asked, "Did you see my tackle?" they could say, "Of course, wouldn't have missed it for the world"...and mean it.

This is for all the mothers who have sat up all night with sick toddlers in their arms, wiping up barf, laced with Oscar Mayer wieners and cherry Kool-Aid saying, "It's okay honey, Mommy's here."

This is for all the mothers of Darfur who fled in the night and can't find their children.

This is for all the mothers of the victims of the latest school shooting and the mother of the shooter. For the mothers of the survivors, and the mothers who sat in front of their TVs in horror, hugging their child who just came home from school, safely.

For all the mothers who run carpools and make cookies and sew Halloween costumes. And all the mothers who DON'T.

What makes a good mother anyway? Is it patience? Compassion? Broad hips? The ability to nurse a baby, cook dinner, and sew a button on a shirt, all at the same time? Or is it heart? The jolt that takes you from sleep to dread, from bed to crib at 2 a.m. to put your hand on the back of a sleeping baby? The need to flee from wherever you are and hug your child when you hear news of a school shooting, a fire, a car accident, a baby dying?

I think so.

This is for reading "Goodnight, Moon" twice a night for a year. And then reading it again..."Just one more time."

This is for all the mothers who mess up. Who yell at their kids in despair in the grocery store.

This is for all the mothers who taught their daughters to tie their shoelaces before they started school. And for all the mothers who opted for Velcro instead.

For all the mothers who bite their lips--sometimes until they bleed--when their 14-year-olds dye their hair green. Who lock themselves in the bathroom when babies keep crying when you put them to bed and won't stop.

This is for all the mothers who show up at work with spit-up in their hair and milk stains on their blouses and diapers in their purse.

This is for all the mothers who teach their sons to cook and their daughters to sink a jump shot. This is for all mothers whose heads turn automatically when a little voice calls "Mom?" in a crowd, even though they know their own offspring are at home.

This is for mothers who put pinwheels and teddy bears on their children's graves.

This is for mothers whose children have gone astray, who can't find the words to reach them. This is for all the mothers who sent their sons to school with stomach aches, assuring them they'd be just FINE once they got there, only to get calls from the school nurse an hour later asking them to please pick them up. Right away.

This is for young mothers stumbling through diaper changes and sleep deprivation. And mature mothers learning to let go. For working mothers and stay-at-home mothers. Single mothers and married mothers. Mothers with money, mothers without.

This is for you all.

Winners of Make Mom An MVP contest

Congratulations to the winners of Smile FM's "Make Your Mom An MVP" contest. The winners will get front row seats at the DownHere concert with special guests Thicker Than Water this Mother's Day, May 10th, 6 PM at Bristol Road Church of Christ in Flint.

The winners had these great things to say about why their mom's were special:

Jon of Burton: She is always willing to listen to me when I need a supportive ear.

Sean of Leslie: My mom, a mother of 4 worked hard for over 15 years as a medical transcriptionist to help support her family. In 1994 my mother was in a terrible accident with my 3 younger siblings, she fell asleep at the wheel and hit atelephone poll. Thank God she and my siblings survived. Shortly after my motherwas diagnosed with a severe sleep disorder, narcolepsy. Since her diagnosis her condition has gotten significantly worse. She has developed clinical depression, and has had several suicide attempts. By the grace of God, she has survived and with prayer and determination she is getting better. My mother is always there for me, no matter how depressed or tired she is, she is truly my rock.

Debbie of Grand Blanc: My mom was extra special cause she raised me to not be ashamed of myfaith. I saw her battle breast cancer and know that whatever the Lord's will, shewould be in heaven celebrating with the angels. She went home to be with Him in 1984after a 10 month battle, and I still miss her, but I know someday, I'll be with her!I am sure she would be praising Jesus at the concert, but she gets to do it live inheaven!

Shannon Marie of Flint: She is TOTALLY SELFLESS, totally - a beautiful teacher and stong as amountain! She is beautiful , very funny! and a TRUE disciple of our Lord Jesus. Sheis the rock and doesn't even realize it ! What a blessed example to everyone she is!

Mother's Day...for the rest of us

Mike Atkinson with 'Mikeys Funnies' writes:

"Since I lost my mom to cancer 14 years ago and my daughter-in-law lost Jacob
Michael in childbirth a couple of years ago, I'm especially sensitive to
those who won't enjoy it. That's why I've collected this page as a resource
for others, to help you understand the great number of people who experience
pain, not joy, on Mother's Day.

I've received some impassioned responses from people over the years that brings me pause before Mother's Day. In the midst of a weekend enjoyed by so many women with kids (including my own), there are so many who are not enjoying it - but wish they were. I'll let them speak for themselves":

"The Hand of Hope" 10 years later.

If you've seen the picture, it would be very difficult to ever forget! At 21 weeks, during surgery in utero, when baby Samuel grabbed the surgeons finger!

On his 9th birthday, here's some of what Samuel has to say: "When I see that picture, the first thing I think of is how special and lucky I am to have God use me that way," Samuel told FOXNews.com. "I feel very thankful that I was in that picture."

11-year-old Alabama boy, whose legs were amputated at birth, runs, skateboards and competes in baseball....Hasaan Hawthorne's take on living as an amputee surprises a lot of people.

"I think it's funner having prosthetics than real legs because you get to do more stuff," said Hasaan, 11, a fifth-grader at Valley Intermediate School in Pelham.

He has shared his philosophy with a substitute teacher whose husband was getting prosthetic running legs, and a student whose grandfather was undergoing amputation.

"I like to inspire people and help people," said Hasaan (pronounced huh-SAHN). "I don't like to see people sad, I like to cheer people up. I'm just like other people, just with different legs."...

The Glowing Pickle

Hey this is the perfect time to start doing stuff like this outdoors!

This really does work! We tried it. You can impress your kids with this one.

When a high voltage is applied across a pickle the pickle will emit a yellow glow.

Material
One extension chord
2 nails
A pickle

Assembly
Cut off the end of extension chord, and split the wires. (Make sure extension is not plugged in yet) Wrap each wire around 1 nail, spread them out so they don't touch each other. Then stick a nail into each end of the pickle. (Make sure nails don't touch.)

Plug in chord
Make sure no one is touching the pickle.
Wait a few minutes
Notice the pickle begins to steam.
Then it begins to flash bright yellow at one end.

Looks best at night

Make sure there is always adult supervision
