Lansing's Be A Tourist In Your Own Town Event!

Need a vacation? Just can't find the funds to getaway?
In this struggling economy it's great to know that families can still find an affordable day of fun close to home with Lansing's "Be A Tourist In Your Own Town" event coming up on June 5th.

With passports only costing $1 allowing free admission into over 50 area attractions and hot spots along with rides on CATA just 50 cents, a family of four can experience
Greater Lansing for less than the price of one movie ticket!

New for 2010: Abram's Planetarium is back on board for some star-gazing.
Folks that haven't yet had a chance can check out the all new Lansing
City Market or take their best shot (bow and arrow shot that is!) at the
MSU Demmer Center. Maybe coolest of all though is the Over the Edge
Event also going on June 5th, being put on by the Team Lansing
Foundation (also a GLCVB entity). At Over the Edge people can watch
participants that have spent the last few months raising money for
charity rappel down the side of Lansing's tallest building, the Boji
Tower. At 23-stories that will really be something to see!

How it works:
For only $1 you can purchase a “Be A Tourist passport” which allows you FREE admission to more than 50 area attractions, local businesses, and special activities on June 5, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. **Ages 3 and under do not require a passport.
Get from place to place with CATA. For only 50 cents you will receive a stamp which will allow you to ride the Be A Tourist routes for the rest of the day for no extra charge.
Where to get your passport:
Greater Lansing Visitor Center, 500 E. Michigan Ave. Ste. 180, Lansing

Also available at:
AAA Michigan-Lansing Office
CATA CTC Station (Downtown)
Celebration! Cinema
NCG Cinema at Eastwood Towne Center
Impression 5 Science Center
Lansing Art Gallery
Arts Council of Greater Lansing (Old Town)

Reasons To Buy Michigan Products

5 Good Reasons to Buy Locally

1.Maintains jobs so our talented citizens can stay in the land that they love.
2.Diversifies Michigan’s economic portfolio so we still thrive when one of our industries comes on hard times.
3.Attracts new employers thereby creating new jobs.
4.Increases the tax base.
5.Reduces our carbon footprint because less fuel is used to move the merchandise, when bought locally.

Also did you know... if every household started spending just $10 per week of their current grocery budget on locally grown foods, we'd keep more than $37 million each week circulating within Michigan's economy.

One Guy Didn't

Three guys were tried for crimes against humanity.
Two guys committed crimes.
One guy didn't.

Three guys were given government trials.
Two guys had fair trials.
One guy didn't.

Three guys were whipped and beaten.
Two guys had it coming.
One guy didn't.

Three guys were given crosses to carry.
Two guys earned their crosses.
One guy didn't.

Three guys were mocked and spit at along the way.
Two guys cursed and spit back.
One guy didn't.

Three guys were nailed to crosses.
Two guys deserved it.
One guy didn't.

Three guys agonized over their abandonment.
Two guys had reason to be abandoned.
One guy didn't.

Three guys talked while hanging on their crosses.
Two guys argued.
One guy didn't.

Three guys knew death was coming.
Two guys resisted.
One guy didn't.

One.
Two.
Three guys died on three crosses.

Three days later.
Two guys remained in their graves.
One guy didn't.

The 15 Money Rules Kids Should Learn

Jenn & Brian talked about these 15 rules your kids need to learn about money.

From the Wall Street Journal:

For those of us who aren't independently wealthy, that puts
unrelenting pressure on the family pocketbook. The financial demands
of raising a child require that money you otherwise might use to
prepare for retirement, or to save for a nicer house, a sportier car
or a swankier vacation, must, out of necessity, be earmarked for Lego
sets and pediatrician visits and school uniforms and Christmas toys
and a college savings account and a minivan and a trip to Disneyland …
and lots of, well, chicken nuggets.

See the 15 Rules:

Find the Smile FM Secret Agent Man.....

Pssst...if you are going to try to find the Smile FMSecret Agent at WinterJam here's a few things you should know;
You must say the phrase that pays,"Pssst, can I
tell you a secret?? I LOVE Smile FM!" directly to the Smile Secret Agent. No shouting it out in a crowd with a megaphone or passing out cards or anything of that sort....just say the phase that pays to everyone you pass and you just might find our Secret Agent and win yourself a sweet computer system with the Digital Praise Guitar Praise gaming system. Oh, one other thing, you can't ask, "Are you the secret agent?" because that just wouldn't be right now would it? "Pssst, can I tell you a secret?? I Love Smile FM!" is all you need to say.
Also if no one finds the Secret Agent the prize won't be awarded so make sure you get out there and find the Smile FM Secret Agent!

He'll find another fix to fix you,

Jenn's Homemade Laundry Detergent

Jenn & Brian talked about Jenn's money saving adventures in making her own laundry detergent....taken from the Duggar Family website.

Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap- Front or top load machine- best value

4  Cups - hot tap water
1  Fels-Naptha soap bar
1 Cup - Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
½ Cup Borax

- Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.

-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.

-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel)

-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.

-Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.

-Top Load Machine- 5/8 Cup per load (Approx. 180 loads)

-Front Load Machines- ¼ Cup per load (Approx. 640 loads)

Powdered Laundry Detergent - Top load machine

1   Fels-Naptha soap bar
1  Cup - Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
½  Cup Borax

-Grate soap or break into pieces and process in a food processor until powdered. Mix all ingredients. For light load, use 1 Tablespoon. For heavy or heavily soiled load, use 2 Tablespoons. Yields: 3 Cups detergent. (Approx. 40 loads)

TIPS FOR LAUNDRY SOAP: We use Fels-Naptha  bar soap in the homemade soap recipes, but you can use Ivory, Sunlight, Kirk's Hardwater Castile or Zote bars. Don't use heavily perfumed soaps. We buy Fels-Naptha by the case from our local grocer or online. Washing Soda and Borax can often be found on the laundry or cleaning aisle. Recipe cost approx. $2 per batch.

A Bump in the Road - Band Addison Road's RV catches fire on tour

Only one week into the tour with Santus Real, the band Addison Road runs into oodles of mechanical problems with the borrowed RV (from FFH) which resulted in a fire that consumed the entire RV AND their trailer of merchandise & some equipment, destroying everything.
With 20-some more shows to do and no transportation the band is relying on God and the goodness of others to get them through.
Please keep them in your prayers.
If you feel led to donate to help them replace their losses you can donate to them through their website http://addisonroad.com/

The Real Job of Dads

Wow!  Check out this article on being a successful parent!  http://www.focusonthefamily.com/parenting/parenting_roles/successful_parenting/real_job_of_dads.aspx

It really hit me, when it said…The real job of dads isn't control. It's to validate every one of his children.  To validate means to let your child know over and over and over, through words and actions, that the following are true:

    * "Hey, you exist and you matter to me."

    * "You're good enough."

    * "You're an okay kid

What about a mom's primary job? It's not cooking dinner, changing diapers or helping a preschooler glue colored macaroni on a coffee can as a Father's Day gift.

The most important assignment a mom has is to nurture her children.  A nurturing mom goes beyond being the "maintenance person" in a child's life. She doesn't just keep a child clean, fed, warm, and dry. She also helps enable her children to develop fully by pouring life into them. She models joy and passion. Nurturing is filling your child up with aliveness.
