God is interested in our hearts, not in us observing rituals.
I use Lent as a time of forgiveness, time to draw closer to God by more reading, personal reflection, and my family reads one Lent Question per day to open up dialoge.
I give something up that has become a "vice" for me. This year it is television. I am always amazed that because I have given it to God I am always suceesful in my "fast".
I alway thought giving something up was a catholic thing, and being a baptist I thought I was exempt from givng anything up...but working w/ a couple gals that are catholic they demanded what i was giving up. I kindly told them my faith did not obsserve Lent in that way :)..but they would hear nothing of it...so i gave up chocolate. I love chocolate and eat it everyday so it is a real sacrific for me. And I have observed Lent in that fashion for several years...and i often think giving up chocolate seems small compared to our Savior giving up His life. Lent is a time for me to yes give up something but more importantly to refelct on my life and dig deeper into the Bible in my studies.
